These include long term geography projects, science projects, sewing, piano lessons, swim lessons, electrical circuits or book writing. A Science Adventure Walk is hands down, one of the FAVORITE thing for all my age groups. Here is how we do one for free! IF you add a few supplies from the local dollar store or Amazon you can easily stock up a basket for Science Walks for under $10, that you use over and over again.

Step 1: Explain the 5 ways Kid Scientists Observe  (hear, see, taste, feel, smell)

Step 2: Pass out the magnifying glasses

10464221_805521322814016_3698245098088253976_nStep 3: Start your Science Adventure Walk looking for anything they are interested in using the 5 senses and skills of observation. Yes, they have licked a leaf before. No, they did not die.

Step 4: Allow them to select an item to observe themselves.

Step 5: This is a fantastic time to introduce the concept of “Natural Habitat” which is the home that the organism lives in naturally. 

Step 6: Observe the item, and if appropriate, respectfully gather the item to further observe, dissect, draw and then return the item to its natural habitat.

Today with my 3 Girls we found 2 different items to Observe, Classify, and Learn from. We found a Live Beetle and a Tree Seed Pod. Both provided at least an hour of science for our special today. Science Goggles on & Let’s Go!
Science Walk Observation

Is it a plant, animal, organism? Will it sink or float? Is it hard or soft? Does it have a smell? Can I taste it? How would I describe it?

Step 7: Talk about what we learned from our observations today. So many learning moments full of joy for free are everywhere around us! Take a few minutes to roll in the grass and enjoy a Science Adventure Walk as a family today!
